The Carbon Footprint of a Grocery Run, By the Number

Most grocery receipts don't tell you anything about carbon. You get a total price, not a total impact. Here's what one ordinary receipt looks like once you scan it with Climfy — six items, ranked Light, Medium, or Heavy.

A few things jump out.

Plant items cluster at Light. Spinach, bananas, and oat milk all land under 1 kg CO₂e. Growing and shipping produce is comparatively low-carbon, even when it travels a distance to reach a store shelf.

Dairy and eggs sit in the middle. Free-range eggs come in at Medium — animal products carry more embedded carbon than produce, but eggs are still far lighter than red meat.

Red meat and hard cheese dominate the total. Ground beef alone (≈13.5 kg CO₂e) outweighs all five other items on this receipt combined. Cattle farming is carbon-intensive at almost every stage — land use, methane, feed production — and it shows up directly in the number.

None of this means cutting any one item out.
